During soil replacement, bare soil can be a source of dust and may contain lead. Here are the steps your family can take to prevent to the spread of dust:

Before:

• Watch the do-it-yourself soil excavation video for tips and ideas.
• Plan for your children and pets to have an alternative safe place to play away from exposed soil.
• Wet the soil before THEP contractors begin digging, especially during the drier times of the year. If it is hot and dry, it’s recommended to run your sprinklers as much as possible in the days leading up to excavation work.

During:

• Remove shoes at the door and avoid tracking dust and dirt inside your home.
• Vacuum, mop, and wet dust regularly. You might find you need to do this more often than usual if soil replacement is scheduled in the hot and dry summer months.
• Keep all windows and doors closed.
• Note that contractors are responsible for moistening exposed soil during digging activities to prevent the spread of dust, especially during periods of drier weather. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the THEP Site Supervisor.

After:

• Consider replacing exterior door mats for a fresh start.
• Hose off areas that get dusty such as patios, outdoor play equipment and furniture; ensure the water drains into the area of soil that will be taken away.
• Replace HVAC/furnace filters as per the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure that the air being circulated is filtered for dust.
