I work in a Pb-based industry and I/my partner is expecting. Should I be concerned?

  • Jobs such as plumbing, welding, renovating or painting houses, autobody work, electrical work, battery recycling, or radiator repair may expose workers to lead dust. As a new parent, if you work in an industry where you may be exposed to Pb there are steps you can take to reduce bringing Pb into the home.
  • Always let your work site know if you are pregnant, as this will impact the interpretation of the results (and/or request to have your results shared with your primary care provider).
  • A mother’s blood lead level affects the blood lead level of her baby during pregnancy but is only a concern in a situation with higher than usual exposure, such as work exposure, home renovations, or hobbies like shooting. If a woman is pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, in a higher exposure risk situation, she should be tested by her physician or, if the timing is convenient, at one of THEP’s blood lead testing clinics. Please contact THEP’s Public Health Nurse at 250-364-6223.
  • If you have a family member who works at Teck Trail Operations or other lead based industries they may undergo work site testing.
