Teck Trail Operations ships and receives several products by rail, including sulphuric acid and fertilizer. Canadian Pacific (CP) trains travel to and from the site once a day, at 10 miles per hour. Kootenay Valley Railway, under contract to CP, manages the rail line and the schedule of the rail cars. Tracks are inspected regularly.
Safety standards are in place for all rail cars with more stringent regulations for cars carrying hazardous materials. Teck Trail Operations and CP conduct safety checks before rail cars leave the property.
Liquid sulphur dioxide and ammonia are shipped by cars designed to withstand rollovers with a special type of valving that can retain the product in the car, even if the valve is damaged. Fertilizer is transported in covered hopper railcars.
Teck Trail Operations has extensive emergency training and capacity to respond to any emergency and will support rail companies with our Emergency Response Team.
