MUST KNOW:
THEP measures for lead and other metals in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg), which are equivalent measurements. The soil results indicate the amount of metals found in your soil. The health risk associated with the level of metals depends on how accessible the soil is and a person’s age. But for most people the risk is low.
SHOULD KNOW:
THEP uses a risk-based framework to guide which properties need remediation first.
Action is taken when there is bare soil where lead concentration is greater than 400 ppm in a home with children under 6 years of age. In homes with children between 6 and 12 years of age, soil lead concentrations need to be greater than 2800 ppm to prioritize remediation.
The quality of ground cover (the extent of bare soil) is also a factor. Soil with elevated metals that is well covered with grass or another cover is a lower risk.
