What exactly does each area of THEP focus on?

Air includes smelter emissions reductions, air monitoring and community dust control. Teck leads and oversight is by the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Parks (ENV) where regulation is involved. Community dust control is implemented by the City of Trail.

Soil includes residential yards and gardens, parks and greenspaces, and property development within the Environmental Management Area. Teck leads with implementation via consultants (Atkins Realis), input from ENV dovetails with the future Wide Area Remediation Plan.

Built Environment includes in-home visits, lead-safe renovation, and the residential lead inspection. Teck leads with implementation via consultants (Atkins Realis), partial funding is provided by Interior Health (home drinking water testing) as well as wider program team input when collaborative investigations are needed.

Health includes in-home visits, community education, children’s blood lead testing and follow-up support. Interior Health leads and is supported by Teck consultants (home visiting team collaboration) as well as the wider program team when collaborative investigations are needed.

Community connectedness & leadership includes being visible and accessible in the community as the source of knowledge and information on lead and sulphur dioxide. This is a group effort via the program team that has representatives from Interior Health, Teck and its consultants, and the City (THEC Lead Facilitator).

Integration, understanding and creating value together includes building the relationships and understanding between the diverse perspectives, partners and committee members and working together to understand the bigger picture of thriving in an area influenced by smelter air emissions. This is a group effort via Interior Health, Teck and its consultants, the City (THEC Lead Facilitator) and ENV.
