As of 2022, close to 2,000 properties have had soil tested and more than 500 properties have had soil management completed to reduce potential exposure to lead. Actions include covering bare soil and removing soil and replacing it with clean fill.
The current prioritization framework is focused on addressing properties with the highest potential risk to children. This remains a priority; however, the program is investigating additional ways to reach more properties, increase efficiency and reduce neighbourhood disturbance.
From a practical standpoint, there are a number of factors that influence how many properties can be managed each year. Environmental factors include weather, seasonal constraints, management for dust control, and impacts to neighbourhoods such as traffic and noise. In addition, each property is different in size and access, which needs to be accounted for. Lastly, availability of local resources and materials must be considered. We take all of this into account as soil management plans are made each year.
